CNN article on HTPCs and PVRs
The article tells readers that they can get the same functionality with an HTPC as they can with a TiVo (as long as they're willing to do a little tweaking of their PC). Well, as someone who has been tweaking his HTPC (w/ SageTV 2 and an Hauppauge PVR-250) for the past 4 months to try and get it there, I can say, without a doubt, that there is nothing better in terms of image quality and ease of use than a TiVo.
Part of the quality issue has to do with the fact that the DirecTiVo doesn't have to do the extra digital-to-analog-to-digital conversion that an HTPC requires when recording from a satellite receiver. The other problem is that I am trying to view the image on a very large screen (65") which will highlight the flaws in the signal.
As far as video goes, I am probably going to use my HTPC to record shows from my DirecTiVo onto DVD and for distributing video to other devices (like my Media MVP)/smaller displays in the house. More on that later.
