DVD format wars to heat up (again)
First, there was the battle between the DVD-R vs. DVD+R formats. Now it looks like the HD-DVD vs. Blu-ray battle is about to heat up. News.com is reporting that the DVD Forum has approved version 1.0 of the HD-DVD spec which includes a requirement to include support for Microsoft's VC-9 codec.

HD-DVD (and Blu-ray) will allow the recording of high-definition material onto DVD. I, for one, can't wait for the technology to be available to consumers. I just wish that we didn't have to constantly take a wait-and-see approach on which new format is going to gain wider acceptance. I'm placing my bet that HD-DVD will be the ultimate winner, in part because of its name (which will be more familiar to consumers due to the "HD" prefix) and in part because of the push from MS.
